Roy continued an "intermediate class" with 8 of the original 24 students. Riley Martin & Keegan Pullis were top local winners in a School Bridge League tournament held last month. They scored 10th overall of the 292 students. Second among the local youths were Matthew Munford and Ethan Bockting. This School Bridge League, a division of the non-profit organization called "The League”, (a worldwide organization to foster community service & character development of students) tournament is held several times a year with 73 tables participating in this earth week 6 pre-arranged hand tournament from 5 U.S. states and Canada. A large group of the students were from Ontario, Canada. The five US states were New York, New Jersey, Texas, Indiana, and Iowa (Mt. Pleasant) and were sponsored by Bill Gates & Warren Buffett. Hannah Taylor, a freshman at the University of Iowa and one of the original Mt. Pleasant students at the start of Middle School Bridge instruction, is starting a class this month that would allow her to apply for an ACBL $500 scholarship award after completing instruction in bridge to 8 or more students this summer. Some of the Mt Pleasant bridge students are planning to participate in Dr. Shris Shaw's Bridge Camp being held in Carlinville, IL July 3-8, 2010 with funding assistance from ACBL Unit 163 and local student fund raisers. Four local duplicate bridge players/teachers will be counselors at the camp; Wyn Seeley, Roy Gilleard, Jean Steffensmeier, and Hannah Taylor. Several duplicate bridge students will participate in the local ACBL Sectional Tournament being held in Mt. Pleasant May 21-23, at the community room, New Public Library, 307 E. Monroe.
